Here at Avalon Animal Clinic in Indianapolis, we offer a full range of preventative services to give your pet the best possible chance for the healthiest possible life.

Preventative Care

The Value of Preventative Care for Pets

When your pet is clearly suffering from a serious illness or other health scare, you don't hesitate to bring him in for veterinary treatment. Preventing that problem from occurring in the first place, however, can save you a lot of money while sparing your pet a lot of misery and risk. Many dangerous conditions can be avoided simply by giving your pet routine preventative evaluations and procedures. You'll also enjoy the peace mind that comes from having a good idea of your pet's overall health at any given time.

Preventative Veterinary Services to Help Your Pet Thrive

Preventative care means regular wellness examinations, ideally starting when your pet is still a baby. We can administer any necessary deworming, check vital signs, and advise you on how to feed your pet. Once your pet is old enough, we can start administering vaccinations. These shots prime the immune system to make antibodies against such deadly diseases as rabies and distemper. We can also start your pet on a lifelong regimen of medications that protect him against fleas, ticks, and internal parasites.

Adult pets should continue to receive annual wellness exams, with senior pets getting two exams per year. Our veterinary team conducts lab tests to check for any signs of internal diseases or abnormalities. We also check vital signs, inspect external features, provide dental checkups/cleanings, and check your pet's weight to see whether he runs the risk for obesity.

Spay and neuter surgery is also considered a form of preventative care, not only in the sense of preventing pregnancy. These procedures to remove the reproductive organs also remove the risk of certain reproductive cancers. Another procedure, microchipping, doesn't require any surgery at all. This injection of tiny microchip beneath your pet's skin can boost your odds of his being identified and reunited with you if he goes missing.
