Microchipping FAQs

At Avalon Animal Clinic in Indianapolis IN, we receive many questions about microchipping. However, it can offer you the peace of mind you need if your pet becomes lost. Below are common questions that we receive about the microchipping process.

Microchipping FAQs

What is a Microchip?

A microchip is a tiny computer chip embedded under your pet's skin as a means for identification. The microchip connects to an online registry with the owner's contact information. If your pet becomes lost, the microchip is scanned, and we can reunite you with your lost pet. It's essential to ensure your information is up to date.

Does a Microchip Hurt my Pet?

The process of inserting a microchip is not painful at all. Most pets don't even notice when the device is implanted. Then, a veterinarian inserts the chips between the shoulder blades. Anesthesia is not required for the procedure, but many owners opt to have one planted during a spay or neuter surgery.

Is a Microchip an Alternative to a Collar?

Collars and tags are quick identification tools for pets, and many places require them. However, tags and collars can become worn or lost over time, making it challenging to identify the owner. Tags and microchips that are updated are great ways to get your pet back to you safely.

What Information is Contained in a Microchip?

Microchips only present identification numbers. The microchip is not a GPS device and cannot track pets if they become lost. Some databases allow you to store your pet's medical information.  You don't need to be concerned about privacy, since the registered information is only what you provide.

Do Microchips Have Side Effects?

There are minimal cases of animals having any side effects from a microchip. The most common issue with the microchip is the migration of the chip. We can help you with your pet if this occurs.

Do Microchips Require Maintenance?

Microchips do not require maintenance, as they do not degrade over time. The most important thing for a microchip is to keep the information up to date. This ensures that your pet is returned to you should it become lost.
