Flea & Tick Prevention

Keeping Your Cat Safe from Fleas & Ticks

Cats are susceptible to a number of parasites, and these include both fleas and ticks. Both of these can cause a number of health problems for cats, so it's best to use parasite prevention to make sure that your cat is as healthy as possible. At Avalon Animal Clinic in Indianapolis, IN, our veterinarian provides treatment and prevention methods for fleas and ticks. We will guide you on how to keep your pet healthy.

Cats and Fleas

A flea can cause a number of serious health problems for cats. Since they bite cats so often, an infestation of fleas can cause anemia from the loss of blood. When fleas bite, they come into contact with the bloodstream, so they can infect a cat with a number of types of bacteria. Fleas can pass Bartonella henselae to cats, which can give them a number of health problems, as well as infect humans with cat scratch disease. Flea bites can also cause cats to develop flea dermatitis, an itchy, irritating skin rash that can be debilitating. Fleas can also lead to tapeworm infestations.

Cats and Ticks

Cats that experience tick bites are also at risk of contracting a number of diseases. Cats can also develop anaplasmosis and ehrlichiosis from these bites. Both are bacterial infections that can be caused by ticks depositing these bacteria directly into the bloodstream while drinking blood from a cat. Tick bites can also cause a lot of irritation and can become infected. Biting and licking the spot may also lead to bald spots in cats. Parasite prevention is highly recommended to keep cats free from both fleas and ticks.
